As a new competition of Eurovision Song Contest approaches, a study by Betting.se has examined the expected revenue from Spotify for the past 20 year’s winners, revealing significant differences in earnings.

When it comes to the number of streams and estimated revenue* for all streams, there is a clear winner at the top of the list. A study by Betting.se ahead of the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, which examined the past 20 year’s winners, has revealed that the winner from 2019, the Irish song "Arcade" by Duncan Laurence, is leading the pack.

The song has been streamed over 935 million times and is estimated to have earned around 3,7 million USD via Spotify. Second on the list is the Italian band Måneskin, whose entry "Zitti e buoni" has earned approximately 1,5 million USD on Spotify.

One finding in the study is how the nordic winners stand strong. In positions 3-5 on the list are Alexander Ryback ("Fairytale"), Loreen ("Euphoria"), and Måns Zelmerlöw ("Heroes").

–It's great to see that the Swedish winners are so popular outside of Sweden. We should also remember that there was a Swedish songwriter, Joel Sjöö, behind "Arcade" in 2019, says Leopold Neurath, gaming expert at the Swedish site Betting.se.

Spotify was launched in 2008 and there are a few older winners, in addition to Ryback's "Fairytale," that are in the top half of the list of estimated revenues from the streaming giant. In 7th and 8th place we find "Satellite" by Lena (2010) and "Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi (2006). In fact, both are more played than last year's winner "Stefania" by Kalush Orchestra.

–It could be another successful year for Sweden or one of the neighboring countries. Looking at the odds right now, Loreen and "Tattoo" are the big favorites, closely followed by Käärija from Finland with "Cha Cha Cha". Norway is also expected to be at the top, says Leopold Neurath.

About the survey

The survey includes all the winners from the past 20 years, from 2022 to 2003. However, there was no competition in 2020 due to the pandemic, which means that 19 artists are included in the compilation.

The data on the number of streams comes from Spotify and is counted up until April 26, 2023. The revenue is based on Spotify's estimated payment range of $0.003-$0.005 per stream.

*In the survey, the revenue for each artist is calculated at $0.004/stream.
